Denice Melisha Martin-Thompson - DeePassionate1_TriniGirl
Denice is an educator, poet (Deepassionate1), author, motivational speaker, Shapeup NYC fitness instructor (TriniGirl), and youth activist. Denice has published seven books of poetry, two picture books, an empowerment guide for girls and a passion-filled guide for the Writer's Notebook. She has developed a resume for youth empowerment through her work as a literacy specialist at Passages Academy, a NYCDOE school serving court-involved students.
Denice has always been committed to youth and community development. Her passion for supporting youth of color was reaffirmed when her own son was faced with the legal system. Being filled with the pain of having to experience her son’s arrest, and the daily reality of her current students, Denice tapped into her creative side and developed a proposal to prevent her son from receiving jail time. It was during this painful moment that Moms on a Mission was created. Today, Moms on a Mission has grown into a community outreach program called Passion Filled People that focuses on creating platforms that will allow individuals to mentor and support court-involved youth.
Denice is the creator of Passion Filled Writers and “Turning pain into passion” has always been her mantra. She often uses this slogan when working with her students. Noticing how difficult it was for her students to be able to verbally express themselves, she turned to the Writer's Notebook and a pen as an outlet for them. She knew it worked for her. Conducting Writer’s Notebook workshops, creative and self-expressive writing workshops, and poetry/spoken word events became the foundation of what she now calls Passion Filled Writers. This creative space has allowed her to encourage creative writing as a long-term artistic and healing practice for her students and adults.
Passion Filled Writers has now evolved into a writing movement for men, women, and children of all ages.
Denice’s work has recently extended into her own personal self-care journey. Being diagnosed with Prediabetes at the end of 2014, and having a history of Diabetes in her life, forced her to make a life-changing commitment to eating better, exercising, and the Creation of TriniGirl Training.
